Some Biblical Principles

As Christians, we believe that we are all sinners, and it is only through the grace and love of God, as epitomised by the death of His son, Jesus Christ, that we are saved and set free.

“For you know the grace of Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9, NIV)

In response to the abundant generosity of God, we give out of gratitude. More importantly, however, we give in order to follow and bear witness to God’s sacrificial love. As God is generous, we too should be generous.

As Christians, we know that our earthly possessions are not ours: everything ultimately belongs to God and we are mere stewards of God’s gifts. We are responsible and accountable to God for the gifts and resources that He has entrusted to us. We must use it wisely.

Giving at EFCA

Effective ministry has various costs. We need to financially support our pastors, who lead us, equip us, and train us to be more mature in Christ. We need to rent suitable facilities for our various services and activities. We have property to maintain. We need to outreach into our community and into the world. We have missionaries to support.

The financial costs of EFCA are satisfied primarily from the giving or offertory of our congregations.

The money collected through offertory may fall into one of five categories. The categories that the money are allocated are immutable. The person giving the money decides the category that the money should go into. These categories are:

General Fund
Pays for the routine expense of the church, e.g. employment costs of our pastors and staff, rental of premises, insurance, water rates, council rates, costs in running our worship services, costs of evangelistic activities, etc
This is also a default category if the donor did not nominate another category.

Mission Fund
Pays for the various missionary organisations that we support. This is governed by a separate Mission budget under the control of the Mission Committee of our church.
Church Building Fund Pays for renovation and development of our church premise (including the acquisition of land and construction of building).
Theological Student Scholarship Fund Pays for the scholarship of theological students. This fund is governed by the Theological Student Scholarship Committee.
Benevolence Fund Pays for individual (usually church members) in serious financial needs. The payment from this fund is governed by the Board of Deacons and is typically only use upon the direct recommendation of our pastors.
